Chapter Twenty-Three

Stirring the bubbling tomato sauce, I find Hunter leaning against the counter and announcing his presence. I give him a coy smile, looking down at the sauce again.

“How are you feeling?” he asks, coming closer to pat Wolverine.

“I’m alright,” I respond, taking the sauce to the counter.

“I still don’t feel good about what I’ve done to you.”

I shake my head, trying to reassure him. “It’s okay, Hunter. You’re just going through a tough time. We all have our moments.”

“What are you referring to?” he looks at me piercingly.

“Ian told me everything you’ve been through. He was trying to sort things out between us.” I take a sip of my hot tea, hoping it will ease my stressed nerves. “You need to unwind. This is a secure environment. You can let your guard down, and I won’t pass judgment on you,” I assure him.

Hunter responds with a slight grin before patting Wolverine again. “Is the pasta ready?”

“Yup,” I reply with a shy smile, fetching two bowls to serve the pasta. Once I give him his bowl, we make our way to the dining area.

“I gave you a hard time tonight. I’m sorry.” The silence is broken as Hunter apologises.

“Don’t apologise.” I halt him from apologising further. “I just need you to stop pushing me away.”

“I promise,” he nods, twirling his fork around the spaghetti.

“Lovely! Now try my Pasta Al Pomodoro.”

He obliges, and I eagerly wait for his verdict. I watch as he slurps up the pasta, his eyes closed in pleasure. Despite everything that’s happened, it feels good to be with him like this, to share a simple moment of comfort.

Suddenly he lets out a low moan of satisfaction as he chews. He opens his eyes in surprise, a look of pleasure on his face. “This is the best Pasta Al Pomodoro I’ve ever had,” Hunter admits. “Seriously, I’m surprised. I didn’t expect you to be such a great cook.”

“I’m ecstatic to hear that,” I lean back in my plush chair. “Cooking is my passion. I love spending hours in the kitchen, and I never tire of it.” I gaze at my pasta with delight.

“You have a talent,”

“You know, I haven’t cooked in a long time.”

“Never stop,” he says before pausing as we both devour our food.“I wanted to call Ian and scold him for telling you everything about me,” Hunter’s expression gets serious as he gulps. “But you know, Vesta, deep down, there’s that tiny part of me that’s so happy that he did.”

I take his hand in mine, trying to offer some comfort. “I know it’s hard. But you don’t have to do it alone. We can get through this together.”

“I just feel so helpless. Ever since my mum died, I don’t know how to deal with it. I left New York in the first place because every place here reminds me of Anna and her. They were my life, and I felt like I had lost my soul when I lost them.” I can see the pain on his face as he talks about his loss.
